Travel to Niigata, Toki Messe

Nuclei in the Cosmos 2016 (NIC-XIV)  will be held 19-24 June, 2016, in Niigata, Japan, at TOKI Messe (Niigata Convention Center). TOKI Messe, is located at the beautiful harbor of Niigata City, at the mouth of the Shinano River, the longest river in Japan.

Niigata City is located on the northwest coast of Honshu, Japan’s largest island, facing the Japan Sea. The two main ways of reaching the city are by plane into Niigata International Airport, and by train into JR Niigata Station.

Direct international flights fly to and from Seoul, Shanghai, and Harbin. Domestic flights fly to and from many major cities, including Tokyo (Narita), Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo. The JR Joetsu shinkansen (bullet train) can take you from Tokyo Station to JR Niigata Station in about 2 hours.

JR East Pass

The JR EAST PASS (Nagano, Niigata area) is a special discounted pass available only to visitors to Japan holding a non-Japanese passport. It allows unlimited rides on all JR East train lines in the JR EAST PASS (Nagano, Niigata area) designated area. You can start with a trip from Narita Airport or Haneda Airport to Tokyo and use the Shinkansen to Niigata. While in Japan, take advantage of this great offer to see a lot more for a lot less. From Narita Airport (NRT)

One of the major international airports in Japan.
We recommend you to take JR (Japan Railway Company) train at the Narita airport, because the Joetsu Shinkansen trains to go to Niigata is also operated by JR, so that you can easily change the trains at the Tokyo station.

1) Narita Airport to Tokyo Station – Narita Express (NEX)
“Narita Express (NEX)” trains are most convenient, which take just one hour to Tokyo Station. All the NEX trains stop at Tokyo Station. The frequency is approximately every 30 min. from 8:00 until 21:00.

2) Tokyo Station to Niigata Station – Joetsu Shinkansen (JR EAST)
The “Joetsu Shinkansen” train takes about two hours to Niigata Station. The frequency is every 20-30 min. The cost is 13,050 JPY. (Ticket price is 6,800 JPY for one-way (Narita Airport to Niigata) together with additional special express charges; 1,500 JPY for Narita Express, and 4,750 JPY (reserved seat) for Joetsu Shinkansen trains, respectively.)

3) From Niigata station, refer to “From Niigata Station to the Venue“.

 

From Haneda Airport (HND)

Located in central Tokyo.
Several international flights will arrive at this airport. From Haneda Airport to Tokyo Station, you have several options.

1) Haneda Airport to Tokyo Station

  • Railway Keikyu
    Take Keikyu-line from Haneda International Terminal Station to Shinagawa Station (cost is 410 JPY), where you can change to the JR Yamanote line. Tokyo Station is only 5 stops from Shinagawa Station (170 JPY). It takes about 30-50 min including time to transfer. On Keikyu-line, you might not need to change the train at Kamata Station, just only passing through (not stop) there. It’s better to take a direct one to Shinagawa Station. Confirm its route before getting on it.
  • Tokyo Monorail Take Tokyo Monorail from Haneda International Building Station to Hamamatsucho Station (cost is 490 JPY), where you can change to the JR Yamanote line. Tokyo Station is only 3 stops from Hamamatsucho Station (160 JPY). It takes about 40 min including time to transfer.
  • Limousine Bus There are Limousine Buses going to Tokyo station every 25-45 min. The cost is 930 JPY to Tokyo Station. Especially during the daytime, we cannot expect the arrival time due to heavy traffic downtown. Also the fare and time will be extremely variable if you use a taxi to Tokyo station from Haneda Airport.

2) From Tokyo Station to Niigata Station
The JR “Joetsu Shinkansen” train takes about two hours to Niigata Station. The cost is 10,370 JPY. (The frequency is every 20-30 min. Ticket price is 5,620 JPY for one-way (Tokyo to Niigata) with additional special express charge; 4,750 JPY (reserved seat) for Joetsu Shinkansen trains.)

3) From Niigata station, refer to “From Niigata station to the Venue“.

 

From Niigata Airport (KIJ)

Located at just 6km east of Toki Messe.

    • Taxi
      It takes less than 20 min. Toki Messe from Niigata Airport by Taxi. (3,000 JPY.)
    • Airport Limousine bus
      You can take an Airport Limousine bus to JR Niigata Station, which takes about 25 min. (410 JPY, 210 JPY for children.) The frequency is approximately every 20 to 30 minutes.

From Niigata Station to the Venue

Trains arrive and depart from JR Niigata Station, the terminal of the Joetsu-Shinkansen trains. Shinkansen trains run from 6:00 to 21:00, connecting Niigata to Tokyo in two hours. There is no train station at the Niigata Airport.

  • Taxi
    Taxis are available in front of Niigata Station. It takes 5-10 min. to Toki Messe, and the fares are less than 1,000 JPY.
  • Public Bus
    The public buses to Toki Messe are frequently operated from the bus stop at the front of the Niigata Station, Bandai exit. It takes 15 min. The frequency is every 15-40 min. depending on the time. For a one-way trip from Niigata Station to Toki Messe the cost is 210 JPY per person.

  • On Foot
     You can walk to Toki Messe. The distance is about 2.0 km from Niigata Station, and it takes about 20-30 min., depending on how fast you walk. If you choose this option, we recommend you to get area map before you start walking.

Electricity
The electric power supplied in Japan is 100V. The plug is typically 2-blade, non polarized and non-grounded, as seen here. Note that there are very few public outlets that support 3-prong plugs, so its useful to carry a 3-to-2 adapter. Make sure the plug blades are the same width, i.e., non-polarized.

Currency Exchange

Social Events

Social Events

The following social events are planned for the Symposium period:

  • Welcome Reception will be held on the evening of Sunday, June 19 for symposium participants and accompanying persons from 18:00 to 20:00 at the Observatory Room (31st floor) of the Hotel Nikko.
  • Poster Session Reception: Refreshments will be served during the poster sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. Accompanying persons are welcome to join poster sessions.
  • An excursion program will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 22. For excursions with remaining availability, bookings can be made at the on-site travel desk until noon of Tuesday. Buses for all excursions will leave from the 1F entrance of the Toki Messe venue at 14:00 and are scheduled to return to Toki Messe at 18:00.
  • The Symposium Banquet will be held on Thursday in the Continental Room (4th floor) of the Hotel Okura from 18:30 to 20:30. A welcome drink will be available from 18:00.

Course-1 Promenade in the old Murakami Town and visit to a ‘sake’ brewery

Murakami Town
Murakami City is an old castle town. Though the castle no longer exists, a lot of traditional houses for living, storage, manufacture, and business are seen on the street. You can visit some of these houses and share the atmosphere of old life. Murakami developed a unique way of making dried salmons, which are displayed in a shop.

Taiyou Sake Brewery
Taiyou Sake Brewery has a history of 350 years. The famous Sake label “Taiyou-zakari” has three essential ingredients: the fine water from the Miomote river, good quality rice from the field of northern Niigata and great efforts of the brewery workers. You can taste Taiyou-zakari at the Brewery.

Course-2 Yahiko Shrine in the forest and visit to a seafood street in Teradomari port

Yahiko Shrine
Located at the base of Mt. Yahiko, Yahiko Shrine has been popular and respected among the local people for a long time. Ancient of cedar and “keyaki” (zelkova) are deep and give a holy atmosphere.

Many shops selling fresh seafood are lined up on the road along Teradomari Beach. The aroma of grilled seafood skewers from the shops may enhance your appetite, and an incredible variety of the food enchants visitors. Walk around and taste.

Course-3 Spoon manufacturing and shopping of Tsubame-Sanjo metal tableware

Spoon manufacturing
The manufacturing of silverware is well developed in the cities of Tsubame and Sanjo. Because of the advanced techniques, stainless-steel cups from Tsubame-Sanjo were used at the Nobel Prize Award reception, and received high praise. You can see the workers in action, talk to them, and even participate in workshops. You can buy their products in a shop.

Course-4 Visit to old manor house and versatile facility for tourists

Northern Culture Museum
The spacious wooden house with more than 60 rooms built on a site of 30,000m2, exhibiting a traditional Japanese architecture. The house and garden have been preserved quite well since their construction in the late 19th century, and still show us the dignified simplicity of a wealthy landowner’s life in the olden days.

Niigata Furusato Village is a multi-purpose tourism facility including the “Bazaar Hall” with its collection of Niigata’s products and specialities, and the “Appeal Hall” introducing Niigata’s history, culture, and several tourist spots. Various events of performance are also organized.

Course-5 Line production of BOURBON snack/biscuit and Shibata Castle

BOURBON Factory
BOURBON is producing confectionery and snack, originating from a local company in Niigata founded in 1924.  Its products are now quite popular and with a wide variety.  We visit production lines for “Biscuit” and “Petit Potato” in the Shibata factory of BOURBON.  We can see the automated process starting from raw materials.

Shibata Castle
Construction of the castle started in 1598 and completed in 1668. A few turrets, wall with artistically assembled stones and surrounding moat remain in their original form. Shibata Castle is listed in the top 100 “Japanese masterpieces of castle”.
